Alternative Fuels

Icon green garbage can
In the field of alternative fuels, RAPTECH offers a solution for the production of (marine) fuel emulsions based on homogenized bunker fuel oils (HFO | HSFO | VLFO | ULSFO) or renewable biofuels with its Hydrodynamic Cavitation Technology and the CaviFlow® Plug & Play Module. The fuel mixtures are low-consumption and environmentally friendly thanks to a significant reduction in emissions of up to 25%. The bunker fuel emulsions naturally meet the ISO 8217:2024 requirements.

The following results were achieved when testing an HFO biodiesel blend with CaviFlow® Cavitation Technology:

  • 13.3 % improvement in viscosity at 50 °C
  • 4 % fuel savings
  • GHG reduction of 25

Maintain Systems - Reduce Emissions
The effective blending of biofuels with traditional fossil fuels using the CaviFlow® Inline Module is an economically viable measure to reduce greenhouse gases without the need for a high investment and conversion budget. Fuel emulsions do not require any changes to engines, on-board fuel supply systems or within the bunker infrastructure. Their blend ratio is adaptable depending on the season.

Another advantage: the reduced fuel consumption means that IMO emission standards are met and shipping companies have to purchase fewer certificates under the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS).

Fuel Reduction and Lower Emissions

The Hydrodynamic Cavitation Technology used to produce the RAPTECH (bunker) fuel mixtures was tested and verified on the company's own pilot plant, which is unique in Europe. It goes without saying that the fuel emulsions comply with ISO 8217:2014.

A test with an HFO biodiesel combination and the CaviFlow® Cavitation Module used revealed significant improvements in the fuel parameters.

The analysis shows:

  • Reduction in viscosity by 13.3% at 50 °C, which improves fluidity and makes combustion performance more efficient
  • Reduction in fuel consumption of around 4%
  • For an MR tanker with around 55,000 DWT, this means a daily saving of around 1.2 tons of fuel
  • Alternative fuel emulsions through cavitation also show a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of up to 25%

Reduced Emissions through Alternative Fuels

Fuel emulsions mixed with the CaviFlow® Inline Module have significantly lower emissions - thanks to their improved combustion efficiency, lower flame temperature and higher oxygen content. This is due to the component mixture and the ultra-fine homogenization of the fuel oils by means of cavitation treatment.

  • 25% reduction in NOx and SOx emissions
  • 30% reduction in particulates and carbon dioxide (CO₂)
  • Fewer fees for emission certificates

The reduction of emissions is becoming increasingly important in the context of emissions trading systems such as the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). With maritime fuel emulsions using Cavitation Technology, shipping companies can comply with current IMO emission standards and advance their sustainability goals - without high retrofitting costs.
Cost Savings

Sustainable Fuel Consumption through Alternative Fuels

Improving fuel atomization and combustion efficiency using cavitation technology in the CaviFlow® Plug & Play Module also leads to lower consumption of fuel emulsions. The lower residues are also due to the ultra-fine homogenization of the fuels and the sensible combination of fuel components.

When CaviFlow® Cavitation Technology was applied to an HFO biodiesel blend, the evaluation showed significant improvements in performance:

  • The viscosity of the fuel at 50 °C was optimized by 13.3 %, which contributes to improved flow properties
  • In addition, a reduction in fuel consumption of around 4 % was observed
  • For an MR tanker with around 55,000 DWT, this corresponds to a saving of approximately 1.2 tons of fuel per day
Reduce Emissions - Maintain Systems

Retention of the On-board Fuel Systems

Adding biofuels to fossil fuels and homogenizing them using Cavitation Technology is an economically viable measure for reducing greenhouse gases. Unlike new alternative fuels, the CaviFlow® Inline Module does not require a high investment and conversion budget. The modules can be plug & play integrated into existing systems simply by means of a flange or threaded connection. Maintaining the existing on-board fuel systems and bunker infrastructure in shipping offers decisive advantages:

  • Low investment costs: ships are already equipped with all the necessary components such as fuel processing units and pipelines that work with traditional fuels

  • On the port side, there are globally established and globally available logistics for the bunker supply of traditional fuels. By using existing systems, costs can be avoided and a high level of supply security is guaranteed

  • In addition, traditional fuel systems are characterized by their technological maturity and high operational reliability. This not only reduces the technical risk during operation, but also facilitates maintenance and spare parts supply

Alternative fuels blended with the CaviFlow® Plug & Play Module burn cleaner. This extends the maintenance intervals of engines and technical systems, which suffer less from contamination caused by sludge and carbon deposits.
Seasonally adaptable

Flexible Mixing Ratio - without Additives

The blend ratio of the fuel emulsions mixed with the CaviFlow® Inline Module is flexible and seasonally adaptable - and of course ISO 8217:2024 compliant. This ensures a number of strategic and operational advantages, especially in shipping with changing environmental and operating conditions:

  • By specifically adjusting the mixing ratio with the CaviFlow® Plug & Play Module , the ignition quality, viscosity or oxygen availability can be optimized - depending on the outside temperature or engine load

  • Inexpensive components (e.g. biofuels, by-products) can be added flexibly depending on availability and without being dependent on price fluctuations

  • For stricter environmental regulations or journeys through emission control areas (ECA), the proportion of low-emission components can be increased depending on the situation

The alternative fuel emulsions produced with the CaviFlow® Inline Module are characterized by their environmental friendliness, as they are mixed without the addition of harmful additives such as emulsifiers, surfactants or polymers. Chemical additives impair the combustion properties of fuels, increase the process parameters and thus the operating costs. Depending on customer requirements, however, additives can be added at any time
Available worldwide

Safe Transportation and Storage of Alternative Fuels

Fuel emulsions produced with the CaviFlow® Inline Module are extremely stable. This means they can be stored, pumped and transported at much lower temperatures compared to conventional HFO.

  • Emulsion fuels easily dissolve in water in the event of a leak
  • This prevents major environmental damage
  • Easier solubility makes handling safer for personnel

Due to their global and widespread availability, there is also no risk of supply bottlenecks in remote ports - in contrast to new alternative fuels, for which the infrastructure is still being developed.
Rely on Future-proof Fuel Solutions now
With CaviFlow® you can produce ISO 8217:2024-compliant fuel emulsions, reduce emissions by up to 25 % and reduce your certificate requirements in the EU ETS - without any cost-intensive conversions to the engine or infrastructure.
