Demonstrated Process Effects

Upgrading of Heavy Fuel Oils
Treatment with the CaviFlow® module promotes:

  • Asphaltene disaggregation
  • Mild molecular cracking
  • Viscosity reduction
  • Shift toward lighter fractions
  • Sludge and sediment minimization

Treatment of FO and HFO has demonstrated measurable improvements in key fuel properties according to ASTM standards:

  • Density reduction: ~2%
  • inematic viscosity reduction: 60-75%
  • Pour point reduction: 13-18 °C
  • Flash point reduction: 49-55%
  • Sulfur reduction: 30-50%

These improvements enhance pumpability, atomization behavior, combustion efficiency, and overall fuel handling performance.

In blending applications, CaviFlow® generates intense micro-turbulence and shear forces, promoting fine and stable dispersion between heavy oils and low-viscosity components such as biodiesel (FAME) or pyrolysis oils.

Compared with conventional mechanical blending, cavitation-assisted blending has demonstrated:

  • Improved homogeneity
  • Reduced sediment formation
  • Lower total sediment potential
  • Improved Mean Stability Index (MSI)
  • Reduced cat fines (Al+Si)
  • Improved viscosity behavior

Independent analyses performed by Bureau Veritas confirmed enhanced blend stability and improved key fuel parameters, as shown in the following table:
Comparison of HFO 380 blended with 20% biodiesel (FAME) using conventional hand blending (HD) and cavitation-assisted blending (CF).
Parameter Unit Blending (HD) Blending (CF) Improvement (%)
Density at 50 °C kg/m³ 948.7 945.5 0.3
°API @ 60 °F (1) - 13.83 14,32 3.5
Kinematic Viscosity at 50 °C cSt 109.2 94.72 13
Sulfur Content % (m/m) 1.35 1.33 1.5
Ash Content % (m/m) 0.024 0.023 4
Pour Point °C - 15 - 15 0
Flash Point °C 129.5 103.5 - 20 (2)
Total Sediment Potential % (m/m) 0.04 0.03 25
Total Sediment Existent % (m/m) 0.03 0.02 33
Mean Stability Index (MSI) - 0.24 0.19 26
Cat Fines (Al&Si) mg/kg 9 6 50
(1) Heavy oils with °API < 22.3 are typically classified as “heavy fuel oil.”
(2) Although the flash point decreased, both blends remain well above ISO 8217 minimum limits for residual marine fuels, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
